Every year, as is tradition, I receive the ham bone from Thanksgiving with whatever is left on it and I stash it in the freezer.

Every year, as is tradition, I also make soups for presents. Mostly for Great Grammy. Then I dine like a king on a semi solid of mashed up peas with chun ks of honey roasted ham.

What are some of your weird traditions?

I love making a lentil soup with the leftover ham bones. Mmm...I just at lunch and I still am making myself hungry by thinking about it.

I don’t have a set recipe so it varies year to year but here’s the jest of it.

I fill a pot with water and let the ham/ bone s simmer for probably around 3 hours. I’ll add onion, carrots, garlic, celery, basil, oregano, and some chicken bu llion and let those cook for about an hour. Finally I add the lentils and let it cook for another hour. I generally don’t add salt and pepper to what I cook as I feel those can be added by the eater to their own tastes.

The best way to serve it in my opinion is with some olive oil, black pepper,  and parmesan cheese on top

Looks delicious! I didn’t know that kind of thick pea soup is a thing in the rest of the world, as here in the Netherlands it’s sort of seen as one of the national dishes. To make the soup even better we add slices of  smoked sausage as well

When I was in grade school, my grandmother used to make manicotti for Christmas Eve dinner. That got old to me pretty quickly though.

For the past 15-20 years, my mom has made Shrimp Creole for dinner one of the evenings before Christmas. This year will likely be the first that she’s made it after  Christmas though...mostly because we’re not going to be able to get to her house before 9 or 10 PM Christmas Eve.

Green fluff.

My wife started a tradition after we were married. The leftover turkey carcass becomes turkey carcass gumbo. She based her recipe on Emeril’s ( https://www.emerils.com/122684/turkey-bone-gumbo )

We also make pineapple/cream cheese celery sticks , pimiento olive celery sticks , and deviled eggs.

Well, a few I can think of are hutspot (mashed potato with bits of carrot and onion mixed in, served with a minced meat sausage), stamppot (mashed potato with kale and pieces of bacon mixed in, served with a smoked sausage and gravy), and (completely different from the other two dishes ) thin pancakes. Most of those are very winter-y though, i n the summer it tends to be all a bit lighter.

In the U.K. we just call it pea and ham soup and I love thick creamy pea and ham soup. Also chunky minted lamb soup and chunky chicken and vegetable soup. Heaven.

Anyone can roast beef. Can you pee soup?

Without looking it up, I don’t know. The only difference I see from one pea soup to the next is that some are green and some are yellow.
